About PostPub
A team of highly motivated PhDs from the US and UK came up with this idea of www.PostPub.org, a web 2.0 environment that provides identity-verified, results-driven, experimentalist-centric platform focusing on reproducibility and methodology of published literature.
The promoting members of this team are all bench-scientists working at Yale, Cambridge, Columbia, Caltech, and UCL, and they have a clear understanding of caveats in experimental research. The team recruited a board of advisors, won the second prize in the Y50K '07 Yale Business Plan Competition, and hired iDes for the main site's front-end, back-end and other applications like its Facebook application.
Requirement
The team's approach was to develop a portal benefiting the scientific community at large, with scope for integration into current publishing workflow. They were very clear as to what they wanted, they wanted to create a resource where experimentalists deposit and search for 'follow-up information' linked directly to any published scientific article. This would:-
· Act as a liaison between readers and authors of scientific publications.
· Assist troubleshooting efforts.
· Create an archive for commonly asked questions.
· Discourage the publication of uncertain/spurious results.
They wanted a platform which is Web 2.0 and refers to second generation web-based services such as social networking, Wikis and communication tools.
Solution
iDes created a robust discussion forum for publications' methodological and experimental issues.
We used open source designs. PHP, MySQL, and Apache are used for site development with immediate feedback capability by an Adobe Spry Framework. We maintain prototype versions of postpub.org. Search results and discussion threads are available as RSS feeds and are cached on the server for faster access. Direct link To PUBMED/LINKOUT/ SCIENCEDIRECT to facilitate searching and cross referencing. Personalized user space a place to specify topics of interest manage uploaded data, share CVs and publication lists.
